Presentation
Le Logis de l'Épinière is a 17th-century country house of character, set in Charente-Maritime, in the heart of the Saintonge countryside.

The estate offers a quiet, unspoilt setting, while remaining within easy reach of the villages of the Charente valley, Rochefort, Saintes, La Rochelle and the Atlantic beaches.
Walks along the Boutonne and the Charente, the markets, the stone villages and the many paths nearby invite you to discover the region without hurrying.
Less than an hour away, the beaches, the islands, the coastal forests and the oyster ports offer another side of Charente-Maritime.

The four gîtes have been created in the estate's former outbuildings. Each has its own garden or terrace, and each was designed to combine character, comfort and privacy.
Some of the gîtes have a large fireplace, for the winter pleasure of a wood fire.
In the warmer months, guests enjoy the pool set between the walls of the former cowshed.
We hope you will feel here the way we would like to feel when we go away on holiday ourselves.

We believe a good holiday is not just comfortable lodgings and a fine pool. It is also built from discoveries, from the people you meet, and from the small attentions that turn a stay into a memory.
When you arrive, we take the time to sit down with you over a map of the region: villages, restaurants, markets, beaches, walks, and places the guidebooks do not always mention.
After that, everyone takes their holiday at their own pace. We remain available, discreetly, to advise you, answer a question or help you book a table.
We hope you will leave with the memory of a place where you felt expected, welcomed and free to enjoy your holiday fully. And perhaps wanting to come back before you have even left.

Flexible stays for 2 to 12 travellers
Designed as a place of breathing and freedom, the estate brings together four completely independent gîtes, each with its own atmosphere. Natural materials, carefully chosen or custom-made furniture, contemporary lines and travel inspirations compose spaces that are both warm and singular.
As a couple, with family or friends, it is possible to stay in a single gîte or to privatize several accommodations, while preserving the intimacy of each.
Four self-contained gîtes, each with its own garden or terrace, furnished with carefully chosen materials and pieces.
Some of the gîtes have a fireplace. All have access, in season, to the estate's large shared pool.
The pool is shared between the four gîtes, but each one has its own private outdoor space, opening onto the garden or the countryside.
Gîtes of different sizes, for a couple, a family or a holiday among friends.

History of the place
Built on the south bank of the Boutonne river meadow, that is, on the edge of these flood-prone lands suitable for grazing, Le Logis de l'Épinière, in Charente-Maritime (commune of Les Nouillers), testifies to a very ancient settlement.

The archives mention, as early as 1461, this seigneury where a certain Nicolas de Montaigne, abbot of Les Alleux and prior of Archingeais, would later reside at the very beginning of the 17th century. The Puyrigauds would follow, then François d'Albret, Count of Miossens, who died in 1671. Other owners, the Bobènes, would stay there until 1841.

To the east, a large square building preserves the overall plan and numerous archaeological traces of its construction around the 1640s.
An important central entrance bay led, through a vestibule and a generous axial staircase with ramp upon ramp, to the four vast rooms on each level.
The cornice that surmounts the facades is now lower than originally. It is surmounted by a large pediment recomposed in the 19th century. The sober style of the original building recalls that of the Counter-Reformation in Saintonge.
To the west, a beautiful 19th-century longhouse fits harmoniously into the bocage spirit of the site.
Finally, to the north, a courtyard surrounded by old farm buildings recalls that after the seigneurial and then, probably, priory vocation of this estate, agriculture persisted until recently.
Arriving in 2008, the current owners of l'Épinière, Laurence and Pierric Couturier, undertook to restore this charming ensemble to house their family life, welcome their friends and a few guests eager to discover authentic Saintonge.

Laurence & Pierric

Between 2011 and 2014, we spent several years bringing the estate's former outbuildings back to life. We restored them to our own taste, preserving their character and imagining gîtes we would want to stay in ourselves.
Laurence looks after the harmony of the gardens, the decoration and all the details that make the atmosphere of the Logis. Pierric particularly enjoys welcoming guests and introducing them to the region.
For more than ten years, we have been glad to share this place with guests from all over France and from many countries across Europe.
